The Chairman of the Enugu State Council of Traditional Rulers, HRM Igwe Samuel Ikechukwu Asadu (Igwe Ogadagidi), has commended Prof. Simon Ortuanya, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), for his transformative leadership in the university during his first year at the helm of affairs.
Igwe Asadu gave the commendation in Nsukka on Thursday, describing the VC as a seasoned academic and an administrator per excellence.
He said that Ortuanya, in one year in office, has repositioned UNN as one of the best public universities in the sub saharan African through aggressive infrastructural renewals, digital innovation projects, expanded medical program capacity, and strategic international academic partnerships.
"I congratulate you on your first anniversary in office as the Vice-Chancellor of UNN. You have written your name on the sands of time. I'm proud of you; the people of Igbo Nsukka are proud of you; staff and students are happy with you and your leadership style, and I am sure that the founding fathers of the University of Nigeria will be proud of you as well.
"You have demonstrated that you are a seasoned academic and an administrator per excellence," Igwe Ogadagidi said.
The monarch, who is also the traditional ruler of Edem-Ani Ogwugwu Ancient Kingdom in Nsukka Local Government Area and the immediate past Chairman, South East Traditional Rulers Council, highlighted some of Ortuanya's achievements in UNN in one year, including:
Revival of the UNN Senate Building, reconstruction of roads within the university campus, redesigning and rebuilding of the institution"s main gate, International collaborations with foreign universities for research and academic exchange and partnership, prompt promotion of staff, among others.
"Within one year in office, the Vice-Chancellor has demonstrated a clear commitment to addressing longstanding institutional challenges through holistic, practical and sustainable interventions, and these have caught the attention of government and key stakeholders in the education sector.
"I, therefore, urged the university governing council, members of the management team, staff and students of institutions to continue to give the VC your full support and encouragement to enable him to continue with the good work," he said.
Prof Ortuanya was appointed as the university’s 16th Vice-Chancellor in August 2025 as the first indigenous son of Nsukka to serve as Vice-Chancellor of the University since its establishment in 1960.
