The Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Enugu State Chapter, Comr. Barth Ebuka Okoh, JP, has called for increased opportunities, employment, skills development and greater inclusion of young people in governance and decision-making across the state.
Okoh made the call in his message to youths in Enugu State to commemorate International Youth Day, with the theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations.”
The NYCN Chairman said the theme underscores the shared aspirations of young people despite differences in their backgrounds and communities, noting that youths across Enugu State desire quality education, meaningful employment, entrepreneurship opportunities, skills development, inclusion and a better future.
He described the youths of Enugu as resilient, talented and full of potential, stressing that young people should not be regarded merely as leaders of tomorrow but as important contributors and leaders in the development of the state today.
Okoh commended the Executive Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, for what he described as the opportunities, empowerment initiatives and youth-focused programmes introduced by his administration.
While appreciating the governor's efforts, he appealed for more programmes and opportunities targeted at young people, particularly in employment, skills acquisition, entrepreneurship funding, technology, agriculture and the creative industries.
He also called for greater participation of youths in governance and decision-making processes, stressing that their energy, creativity and talents are critical to the socio-economic development of Enugu State.
The NYCN Chairman, however, urged young people to complement government efforts by taking responsibility for their personal and collective development.
He encouraged youths to acquire relevant skills, embrace hard work, reject crime and violence, and make productive use of available opportunities.
Okoh further reaffirmed the commitment of the NYCN Enugu State Chapter to constructive partnership with the government and other stakeholders towards building a state where every young person has the opportunity to dream, contribute and succeed.
He said the council would continue to advocate for policies and programmes that promote youth development, empowerment and inclusion across Enugu State.
He concluded his message with the call: “Different Contexts. Common Aspirations. One Enugu. One Future.”
The NYCN Chairman also extended his warm wishes to all young people in Enugu State on the occasion of International Youth Day.
