UNN's ACE-SPED secures Federal accreditation as environmental consultant

By Ikemefuna Ikem, Nsukka

The Africa Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Power and Energy Development (ACE-SPED), University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has received accreditation from the Federal Ministry of Environment to operate as an Environmental Consultant, with competence in Environmental Laboratory Services.

The accreditation, issued recently, is valid until July 23, 2031; it authorises the Centre to provide environmental characterisation and analysis services in accordance with the regulatory requirements of the Federal Ministry of Environment.

The development marks a significant milestone in the Centre's efforts to advance scientific research, environmental monitoring and sustainable development through its Laboratory of Materials Characterization and Analysis (LMCA).

Speaking on the achievement in Nsukka on Thursday, the Director of ACE-SPED, Prof. Emenike Ejiogu, expressed delight over the successful completion of the rigorous accreditation process.

Ejiogu described the recognition as a testament to the Centre's investment in advanced laboratory technology and its commitment to building scientific capacity for addressing environmental challenges.

He noted that the accreditation would further enhance the Centre's ability to deploy its research infrastructure and technical expertise in providing practical solutions to environmental problems.

The ACE-SPED Director also commended the management of the University of Nigeria, as well as the academic and technical staff of the Centre, for their dedication and contributions towards securing the accreditation.

He said their collective commitment and support were instrumental to the successful completion of the certification process.

The accreditation is expected to strengthen ACE-SPED's capacity to deliver reliable environmental laboratory services while expanding its contributions to research, environmental sustainability and national development.

"The accreditation represents a major milestone in our commitment to scientific excellence and professional services that support environmental protection and sustainable development.

"It will strengthen our capacity to provide reliable laboratory services and deploy our research expertise in addressing critical environmental challenges.

"I sincerely commend the University management, as well as the dedicated academic and technical staff of the Centre, for their unwavering commitment, collective efforts and invaluable contributions, which were instrumental to the successful attainment of this accreditation," Ejiogu said.

ACE-SPED is a World Bank-assisted research, postgraduate education and training centre domiciled at the UNN. Its mandate is to develop highly skilled manpower and promote innovative research, postgraduate education and professional training aimed at addressing electricity and energy challenges in Nigeria and other countries across Sub-Saharan Africa.
