ACE-SPED multi-million naira Core Building in UNN to be inaugurated on Dec 19

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) would on December 19, 2024, inaugurate the Africa Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Power and Energy Development (ACE-SPED)'s multi-million naira Core Building, a World Bank-assisted project.

Prof. Emenike Ejiogu, the Director of ACE-SPED disclosed this in Nsukka on Monday while speaking with our correspondent on the inauguration.

He said that the well-equipped building features an Ultra high-tech Materials Characterisation Laboratory; a 3-D Innovative Electronics Prototyping Laboratory and a Centre for Competence in Digital Education (CCDE) Ultra Modern Studio.
According to the Director, Prof. Polycarp Chigbu, the Acting Vice-chancellor of UNN would lead the university management and governing council members to inaugurate the multi-million naira project.

"The mandate of ACE-SPED is to proffer sustainable solutions to power and energy challenges, peculiar to Sub-Sahara Africa through impactful educational research," he said.

Ejiogu explained that the centre would through its programmes award Master of Engineering, Master of Science and PhD in Renewable New Energy Systems, Power Engineering, Sustainable Energy Material Engineering, Industrial Electronics Devices, 

Also, the centre would award certificates on Control Instrumentation Engineering, Energy Policy, Regulation and Management. Engineering Design and Product Development, Management of Technology and Innovation as well as professional Diploma in Additive Manufacturing (3-D printing).

"All the programmes of the centre have already been accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

"Officials from the Federal Ministry of Education and NUC Abuja are expected to witness the inauguration on December 19," the director said.

The centre has laboratories, workshop halls, lecture theatres, office accommodations, among others

Speaking on the state-of-the-art Axia ChemiSEM Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), installed in the Centre, the Director noted that the procurement and installation of the equipment align with the Centre’s sustainability objectives.

“While our staff and students will benefit from the capabilities of the equipment, we are also open to doing businesses with researchers and other entities,” he said.

He said that the SEM machine has provided opportunities for researchers and industries to conduct their analyses within Nigeria, thereby eliminating the burden of spending substantial amount of dollars overseas.

“Katchey Company Limited, a Dealer Partner of Thermo Fisher Scientific, in collaboration with Thermo Fisher Scientific supplied the UNN ACE SPED Axia ChemiSEM equipment. Katchey Company Limited will continue to provide the after-sales support services for the optimal usage of the scanning Electron Microscope and the other equipment supplied," Ejiogu said.
