The All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign in Nsukka Local Government Area rounded off its grassroots campaign tour on Wednesday with a grand rally at Urban Girls Field, drawing party leaders, supporters, community stakeholders, women and youth groups ahead of the September 26 council election in Enugu State.
The campaign train had earlier visited Ihe Ward and Owerre/Umuoyo Ward before moving to Nkpunano Ward, the home ward of the council chairman and APC chairmanship candidate, Engr. Jude Chinedu Asogwa.
At Ihe Ward, the campaign team received a large turnout of party faithful, community representatives and political stakeholders, who expressed support for Asogwa's candidacy.
Among those who addressed the gathering were former Nsukka Local Government Chairman, Hon. Barr. Walter Ozioko; SPA to the Chairman on Political Matters, Hon. Chinweuba Ngwoke; the newly appointed SA to the Governor, Hon. Chidinma Ozioko; the PG of the community, Chief Nduka Amoke; Hon. Asadu Michael; Hon. Ukwueze Emmanuel (Ogazi), and Hon. Attah Chidi, among others.
The team also visited the traditional rulers of Owerre and Umuoyo communities.
At the palace of HRH Igwe Dr. Emeka Felix Ugwu, Igwe of Owerre Ancient Kingdom, and HRH Igwe Dr. Ejike Asadu, Igwe of Umuoyo, the traditional rulers prayed for the council chairman and encouraged him to remain attentive to the needs and concerns of the people.
The rally at Amaeze Hall Compound in Owerre/Umuoyo Ward also attracted party leaders and supporters, including Hon. Festus Onogwo, SA to the Governor; Chief Simeon Ezugwu; Ezugwu Patrick; Chief Ozioko Francis; Hon. Dominic Attah, former member of the Enugu State House of Assembly; and Comrade Anthony Ugwu.
The stakeholders commended the council chairman for his interventions in various infrastructural challenges within the communities.
The grand finale at Urban Girls Field recorded another large gathering, with women and youth groups from Echara, Umuakashi and other communities joining party supporters and stakeholders from Nkpunano Ward.
Among those present were Mr. Asogwa Emmanuel, Hon. Mrs. Nnenna Agu Nwangwu, Chief Attajah, Chief Joe Concord, former Deputy Mayor; Rt. Hon. Dickson Tochukwu; Hon. Ezema Chris; Hon. Uche Eze; and Comrade Onyekachi Omeje.
In a show of support, APC Nkpunano Ward presented a cow to Asogwa, describing the gesture as encouragement for continuity.
Speaking at the rally, Deputy Governor of Enugu State, Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai, commended the council chairman and party faithful for their support and urged them to remain committed.
Ossai also defended Asogwa's record in office, saying: “If Jude is not worthy, he wouldn't have performed and returned to continue the works he started.”
The Deputy Governor described the chairman's return as an indication that his performance had received recognition among the people.
Senator Ikeje Asogwa, who also addressed the gathering, thanked the council chairman for what he described as his commitment to the APC.
He urged supporters not to be distracted by threats from opposition groups ahead of the election.
“Don't be moved by threats of the opposition, we will outwork their expectations and the election will be peaceful,” Senator Asogwa said.
Hon. Chidi Mark Obetta, Member representing Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, also expressed support for Jude Asogwa, describing him as a leader who understands the aspirations of the people.
Obetta said Nsukka was fortunate to have a council chairman who, according to him, had demonstrated an understanding of the needs of the people and promised continued support for the party.
In his address, Jude Asogwa highlighted projects and interventions carried out by his administration, including road construction, electrification projects, boreholes and water reticulation.
He cited the construction of roads within GRA, Odoru and the ongoing road project linking Urban Girls Road to Amaji-Umuakashi, as well as electrification projects in Ibagwa-Agu and Odoru.
The council chairman also referenced ongoing projects and developments by the Enugu State Government, including smart schools, Type 2 hospitals and road projects across the state, while highlighting federal interventions and appointments involving people from Nsukka.
He expressed confidence in the APC's grassroots structure in Nsukka and called on the people to support the party's candidates in the council election.
The campaign tour was attended by the council's Vice Chairman, Hon. Malachy Onyechi; Member representing Nsukka West State Constituency, Hon. [Name]; Leader of the Council; Zonal APC Chairman, Hon. Fab Onah; and various support groups, including Umuada Jude Asogwa and Men Dey Support Group.
The rally marked the end of the APC campaign outreach across the 20 wards of Nsukka Local Government Area ahead of Saturday's council election.
