Penultimate week, the social media was agog with the cheery and trending news of release of Mrs. Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of the former deputy Senate President, Professor Ike Ekweremadu, from the UK prison. The news was generally received by every DiCK, Tom and Harry across Igbo land with the joy and celebration associated with it.
It is no doubt the jubilation of her release was a signal that the former DSP will soon rejoin his family in Nigeria as well as reunite with his teaming supporters and admirers across the Southeastern Nigeria who continue to bemoan his absence in the Nation's polity, where he was a major player.
A political tactician and strategist of uncommon pedigree, Prof. Ekweremadu remains one of the biggest political revelations from Enugu State, the South East and Nigeria in General.
In the Senate where he held sway, while extraordinarily contributing and shaping the fortunes of the federation, through servy and exemplary legislations, Prof. Ekweremadu's voice resonated with strength and vast experience, culminating in the quality representation he provided for his constituents, the people of Enugu West, Enugu State, South East and Nigeria.
He was instrumental to very many far-reaching legislative contributions at the upper chamber of the Nigerian Senate, where he plied his trade as the 'Special One'. His agitation for the creation of additional state for the East, campaign for six years single presidency, his crusade for equality among regions and the unbridled leadership he provided among the Southern federal Lawmakers present him as timeless parliamentarian.
Prof. Ike's strength in politics lies in his empowerment programs which can be categorized into different forms, ranging from his unequal scholarships for students, human capital development programs among his core followers, sponsorship of oversees trips for outstanding personalities, bursary awards for deserving individuals, among many heart-touching programs of the Lawmaker.
His constituency projects across Enugu West, Enugu state and the South East are innumerable. He has constructed uncountable number of roads for different rural communities (this includes his construction of a key road at Obimo in Nsukka LGA, Enugu North Senatorial Zone), his provision of electricity for many rural communities, donation of numerous boreholes for the benefit of the needy as well as his execution of too many mouthwatering projects in the East.
It was the above impactful representation and many more that had, penultimate week, triggered wild celebrations across the Southeastern Nigeria, following reports of the release of his wife, Mrs. Beatrice Ekweremadu, who was jointly incarcerated with the veteran parliamentarian in the UK Prison.
The Ekweremadu euphoria was sure, a great wind that blew across the East in the past one week, and it has however, provided us with the joyous expectation that indeed, "IKE IS COMING'.
