Igwe Asadu mourns victims of Enugu tanker explosion

...Joins call for enforcement of anti-spill lock on fuel-laden tankers

His Royal Majesty, Igwe Samuel Asadu, the Chairman of Enugu State Council of Traditional Rulers has expressed shock and sadness over the tragic fuel tanker explosion that occurred on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at the Ugwu-Onyeama axis of the Enugu-Onitsha expressway which claimed many lives and caused injuries. 

The incident, which happened at about 11:30 a.m. on that fateful day
when a fuel-laden tanker had a brake failure, fell and exploded leaving many commuters dead and injured, with 11 vehicles burned to ashes.

In a statement released in Enugu on Tuesday, Igwe Asadu who said he was deeply shocked by the tragic incident, extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

He commended Governor Peter Mbah for his promptness in visiting the fuel tanker accident scene, as well as directing full medical attention to the victims and taking steps to forestall future occurrences.
"I’m deeply shocked and concerned by the tragic incident at the Ugwu-Onyeama axis of the Enugu-Onitsha expressway. It’s been one death too many. 

"I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families as well as the government and the good people of Enugu State. I also wish the injured speedy recovery.

"I also wish to commend the state governor, Peter Mbah for his quick response to the accident scene, as well as directing immediate medical attention to the injured," he said.

Igwe Asadu, who is the traditional ruler of Edem-Ani Ogwugwu community in Nsukka LGA of the state appealed to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the state Ministry of Transport to heed the call of the governor and start enforcing the rules that prohibit fuel-laden tanker drivers from the road without an anti-spill locks.
"Members of the FRSC and other relevant authorities in the country should invoke the law that prohibits tankers conveying premium spirit and other inflammable products without anti-spill lock from plying on the roads.

"The anti-spill lock is very necessary, it would ensure that when these trucks fell, they do not spill their contents," he said.
