The lawmaker representing Igbo-Etiti/Uzo - Uwani Federal Constituency in the House of Reps, National Assembly, Hon.Dr. Martins Oke, on Tuesday moved a motion on insecurity in parts of Uzo Uwani LGA of Enugu State.
Okehi, at the floor of the House of Representatives, expressed displeasure at the reoccurring attacks of innocent citizens in his constituency, while urging "the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Director General Department of State Security (DSS) and National Security Adviser (NSA) to deploy more Security Personnel to Uzo-Uwani LGA for increased Security Surveillance and support.
The Federal Lawmaker also called on "the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to come to the aid of the indigenes of Ugwuijoro Village, Nimbo, Uzo-Uwani LGA of Enugu State with Food Items, Beddings, Shelter, etc, who are Internally Displaced following the recent attacks and killings."
In a MATTER OF URGENT PUBLIC IMPORTANCE MOTION, the Federal Law maker representing Igbo-Etiti/ Uzo-Uwani Federal Constituency, HON.DR. MARTINS OKE intimated the House of Representatives on the URGENT NEED TO BEEF UP SECURITY AT NIMBO, OPANDA AND OGBOLI DEVELOPMENT CENTRE OF UZO-UWANI LGA OF ENUGU STATE, FOLLOWING PERSISTENT SERIAL KIDNAPPINGS AND KILLINGS IN THE AREA.
He However stated that section 14(b) of 1999 Constitution provides that the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government.
The lawmaker lamented that Nimbo, Opanda and Ogboli Development Centre constitute a group of towns in Uzo-Uwani LGA of Enugu State, but have come under persistent attacks by unknown gunmen.
He stated that "on Sunday 28/04/2024 by 5am that Ugwuijoro Village of Nimbo town was attacked by a group of gunmen who sprayed bullets on the sleeping village, killing many persons including women and children.
The parliamentarian further stated that "on Sunday 14/04/2024 that a group of gunmen attacked farmers in Adani in Ogboli Development Centre, killing three persons.
Okeh also noted that "on 25th April 2016 that a similar attack occurred at Nimbo leading to the gruesome murder of 46 persons.
He However stated that "these criminal elements have continued these serial kidnappings and killings despite presence of three Police Divisions in the LGA which have obviously been overstretched."
The Green chamber, after careful examination of the motion, however resolved as follows:
"That the House do observe one minute silence in honour of the deceased persons
The House Urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to come to the aid of the indigenes of Ugwuijoro Village, Nimbo, Uzo-Uwani LGA of Enugu State, who are Internally Displaced following the recent attacks and killings.
"The parliament also Urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Director General Department of State Security (DSS) and National Security Adviser (NSA) to deploy more Security Personnel to Uzo-Uwani LGA for increased Security Surveillance and support.
"The House finally, Mandated the Committees on Police, Army, National Security and Intelligence, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), etc to ensure compliance."
