Enugu LG Poll: Nsukka records peaceful election

The Enugu State local government council election on Saturday, September 21st was peaceful in all the polling units monitored by our correspondent.

However, the distribution of election material started at about 10:38 am while voting started in some polling boots at about 11:00 am.

Some of the voters who spoke with our reporter noted that the voting process was peaceful and transparent as they cast their vote without harassment or intimidation by anybody.

Speaking shortly after casting his vote, Chief Jude Asogwa, the candidate of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in the election thanked the residents for coming out en mass to exercise their franchise.

Asogwa, who voted at about 12:05 am at Otobo-Odoro pulling units, Nkpunano ward expressed his satisfaction with the electoral process, and Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) for organizing a free, fair, and transparent election.

The PDP candidate noted that he would accept the outcome of the election as a democrat in good faith given the transparent process of the election.

"I pledge to accept whatever is the outcome of this election since it is free fair and credible," he said.

Also speaking, Chief Ernest Ogwo, Labor Party (LP) who voted at Otobo- Agorumodo 008 polling unit, Lejja ward alleged that election results sheets were not available in his polling unit and some other units.

"I am not comfortable with some of the process of this election especially the unavailability of results sheets in my pulling out unit and other units," he said.

Ogwo also complained about the later arrival of electoral materials in some of the polling units.

Meanwhile, the PDP chairman in Nsukka LGA, Mr Chris Ezema expressed satisfaction with the smooth distribution of election materials, as well as the large turnouts of voters in many polling units.

He commended ENSIEC, ad hoc staff, and security agencies for their various contribution to making the election peaceful free, and fair.

Speaking to newsmen, Rev. Fr. Simon Ugwueze, Director of Justice and Peace Commission in Nsukka Catholic diocese, said that the election was free and fair from his observations.

"Not only that voters voted for the candidates of their choice, but the process was free from intimidation, harassment, and vote buying.

"I urge all the candidate to accept the outcome of the election in good faith since the election was free and fair and transparent," he said.
